Scientific-expert Committee on Lake Sevan Preservation by National Academy of Sciences of Armenia gave its negative assessment to Amoulsar open gold mining project. Despite that, Nature Protection Ministry signed its positive opinion on that project. The project was submitted by Geoteam Company at the public hearings on 30 July 2012.
The reply letter of Scientific-expert Committee (no. Е/18/2012 dated on 09.08.2012 signed by Chairman Vladimir Movsisyan) to EcoLur’s enquiry outlines Vorotan and Arpa river pollution risks included in the drainage basin of Lake sevan, radiation risks, landslip and seismic risks. “The Committee gives its negative opinion to the working draft “Developing Amoulsar gold mine located on borders of Vayots Dzor and Syunik Regions,” the committee letter says.
At the same time EcoLur received a statement from Geoteam Company implementing Amoulsar project, which particularly says, “…after the public hearings on 30 July Nature Protection Ministry issued its positive opinion and approved the EIA submitted at this stage…In accordance with requirements posed by Nature Protection Ministry the company committed itself to fulfill measures on environmental monitoring and studies as prescribed by law…” says Geoteam statement.
