Vahagn Khachatryan: Zangezour Will Die in 20 Years

“Qajaran town won’t exist as such in 20 years: Zangezour will die after 20 years,” in reply to EcoLur’s question a member of the Armenian National Congress, Ex Yerevan Mayor, Vahagn Khachatryan said. The mining volumes are increasingly getting more and more in Armenia, which results to soil exhaustion, on one hand, and the pollution of huge areas due to mining, on the other hand. How long will Zangezour area survive, where the following plants are operated- Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine, Agarak copper and molybdenum combine, Kapan ore dressing combine, plus nine tailing dumps and not to take into consideration the areas full of tails and barren rock?

“We are repeating Russia’s mistake. Russia had an opportunity to change the logic of developing its economy due to its resources under the condition of high gas and oil prices. They couldn’t do it. That is, because of the same policy Russia found itself in a bad situation. In our case, irresponsibility is higher with such a small territory. I am a supporter of market economy, but in this very case I support mining to be state-run field, as private owners only destroy like a monster,” Vahagn Khachatryan said. “The mining field makes super profits. They should be deprived of these superprofits, which will be directed to solve the current environmental problems.”
