Armenian NPP Celebrating the 55 Anniversary

The Armenian NPP celebrates its birthday on September 17. Exactly 55 years ago, on the initiative of the Government of the USSR, a joint decision was made with the USSR Council of Ministers to build the first nuclear power plant in the Caucasus.

Today, the Armenian NPP generates more than a third of all of Armenia's electricity, ensuring the country's energy security and independence. The station plays a decisive role in the development of the energy sector in Armenia, the whole socio-economic life of the republic, developing science and modern technologies to improve the quality of life of people.

Within the framework of modernization, works are being carried out in the reactor department of the Armenian NPP, the emergency cooling system of the reactor zone, the ventilation system of the boron node and the reliable power supply system are being modernized. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, which will increase the productivity of the Armenian NPP and increase its capacity to a nominal 440 MW instead of the current 390 MW. The plant will become even safer, RA State Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation is expected to reach a decision on issuing an activity license until 2026.

According to RA Energy Development Strategy, the term of double operation of the Armenian NPP is set until 2036. For this purpose, Rosatom State Corporation and RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure has set up a working group, which is working out a concept for the extension of the operation of the Armenian NPP, which is expected to be agreed by the end of this year.
