RA Environmental and Mining Inspection Body Filed Report to RA Police To Find out Person Having Broken Irrigation Aqueduct of Syunik Village

EcoLur

In order to find out the person having broken the irrigation water pipe in Syunik village, Syunik Region, Nature Protection and Mining Inspection submitted a report to Kapan Regional Division of RA Police on the basis of the EcoLur alarm. EcoLur was informed about this by a letter from Deputy Minister of Nature Protection and Mining Inspection A. Hakobyan.

Reminder: still in 2018 EcoLur received an alarm signal from Syunik Village, Syunik Region that the wastewater is flowing into the irrigation canal of the village.

In 2013-2014 due to the grants given by the UNDP/GEF and the OSCE, the alternative water canal of Syunik Village was rehabilitated, due to which the village has been receiving clean water for several years.

Before the rehabilitation of the alternative canal, the land areas in the village had been irrigated with the water flowing out Artsvanik tailing dump and into Atchanan River after undergoing mechanical cleaning. According to the studies carried out by the Center for Noosphere Ecological Studies of NAS RA in 2007-2008, the plants growing in Syunik Village were considered to be hazardous for use.

EcoLur received an alarm signal that the water intake of the newly constructed canal was partially demolished and the polluted water of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine was joined to the clean water, most probably, to increase the water amount.

EcoLur has addressed this alarm signal to RA Nature Protection and Mining Inspection so as the Inspection Body

- carries out inspections and finds out how the wastewater of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine is found in the irrigation canal of Syunik Village,

- appraises the damage caused to the environment with the irrigation of wastewater and determine the amount of the compensation to be paid to the land users and the state,

- obligates to remove the wastewater from the canal and not to carry out illegal water intake,

- obligates Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine to install chemical cleaning stations for the cleaning of industrial wastewater.

The reply letter of Inspection Body 04/20 / 2764.19 dated on September 11, 2019 states: “During the inspection carried out by RA Environmental and Mining Inspection at “Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine” CJSC they referred to the matter raised in paragraph 1 of your letter, as a result of which it was revealed that it has nothing to do with the company's activities.

Based on the aforementioned, a report was submitted by the inspection body to Kapan Regional Division of RA Police to find out how or by whom the concrete irrigation water supply pipe to Syunik community was broken.

I would like to inform you that the mining project does not plan to install chemical cleaning plants."
