SHPP Water User Permits To Be Reviewed: Environment MInister

Water use permits (WPs) issued to a number of small hydropower plants will be reviewed, as RA Environment Minister Romanos Petrosyan told on March 2 during a Facebook live press conference organized by the Azatutyun radio station.

The Minister stated that inspections were carried out in 17 SHPPs in Yeghegis Gorge. As a result of complex inspections of WPs, there are sufficient grounds for violations.

"Soon the package will be presented to the attention of the law enforcement bodies, which will be followed by the annulations of certain WTs, terminations and reduction in volumes,” he noted.

Referring to the problems of SHPPs operating in Shirak Region, Romanos Petrosyan noted, "We have a number of lawsuits, numerous criminal cases initiated in connection with SHPP activities. Shirak Akhuryan water basin management plan will be amended soon. As a result of the amendment to the plan, all existing WPs will be reviewed.”
