DENDROCIDE IN ODZUN

DENDROCIDE IN ODZUN

Atom Sargsyan, Aravot

On the eve of the New Year a whole grove of pine and fir trees was cut down in Odzun Village, Lori Marz.

According to the Armenian Government decision, cutting of pine and fir trees in Armenia is strictly forbidden. If this decision is violated and damage caused to forest is grievous, then offenders can be subject to criminal responsibility.  Maybe that’s why all the sellers of pine and fir tress are not locals, but from Russian and Georgia.

On the eve of the New Year 300-400 trees were cut down in Odzun Village, Lori Marz, once a dense pine and fir forest. The workers, who were cutting down the trees, said that those trees hinder high-voltage posts. The following fact is noteworthy: these posts have been fixed long time ago and no problems arose with trees so far.  Besides, cutting a whole grove for several posts is illogical.

Under Odzun villagers, trees were cut down with the help of machines the workers brought with them. They think that this process was possible only with permission of high-rank persons.
