Accident in Artsvanik Tailing Dump Pipeline: Polluted Water Flowed into Voghji River

Early in the morning of October 17, the water currents from the Artsvanik tailing dump owned by Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum CJSC flooded into the Voghji River. According to RA Ministry of Nature Protection and Mining Inspection, the accident has been eliminated so far. The inspectors of Syunik Regional Division carried out an inspection, recorded the facts, and sampled the contaminated water. The company was instructed to carry out works to eliminate the consequences of the accident. The Inspection also reports that the causes of the accident are being investigated and environmental damage will be calculated.

RA Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan said at a government session on 17 October that investigations into the accident were underway. “Experts are investigating the scene. As a result of the investigation of the scene and the data provided by specialists, the issue of initiating a criminal case will be discussed,” he noted.
