During his visit to the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin said that he would extend the repayment term of the RF loan for re-equipping the ANPP until 2030 and possibly re-extend the ANPP operation lifetime after 2026. He referred to the Armenian Energy Development Strategy, which is designed for a period up to 2036, but indicated a period of 2040. Apparently, this is the new term for the extended operation lifetime of the ANPP.

“According to Armenia's energy development strategy developed this year, by 2040 the Armenian NPP will remain one of Armenia's most important energy facilities in the medium term. Russia and Armenia have recently reached a number of important decisions that have allowed it to extend the term of the Russian credit line, agree on the rest of the workplan and plan at least until 2030,” as RF Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said during his visit to the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, which he paid together with TAI Minister Suren Papikyan on December 10.

“Armenia has a problem not only to be self-sufficient in energy but also to continue to be an exporting country. It is important to note that the enhancement of the ANPP security is a permanent process, it is implemented from the moment of re-commissioning and will continue until the last day of operation of the plant," the Minister emphasized, adding: "Our NPP operates in compliance with all international standards, all aimed at enhancing security. The measures and the high assessment by international organizations indicate that our neighbors' concerns about security are inappropriate,” Suren Papikyan said.

Movses Vardanyan, Director General of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, for his part said that discussions on the concept of extending the plant's lifetime are already underway and the matter of extending it for 5 or 10 years is being studied.
