Information and Public Relations Department of RA Nature Protection Ministry
A number of Hrazdan-based NGOs have applied to Armenian PM Karen Karapetyan, RA Nature Protection Minister and Minister for Emergency States expressing their concerns with UNDP‐GEF “Elimination of obsolete pesticide stockpiles and addressing POPs contaminated sites within a Sound Chemicals Management Framework in Armenia” project, under which it's planned to establish National Center for Hazardous Waste Storage and Management in partnership with the Ministry for Emergency States designed for Nubarashen pest burial site wastes.
There was a discussion held at Deputy Nature Protection Minister Khachik Hakobyan, who is also the project coordinator, who informed that based on their request Management Council of the project has already reached a decision that 7100 tons of contaminated land won't be transferred from Nubarashen to the temporary warehouse, but will be neutralized on the spot.
The representatives of the civil society organizations expressed their concerns that the warehouse for the storage of pesticides containing persistent organic pollutants may pose a danger for the local population thus hindering agriculture, cattle breeding and bee keeping.
Deputy Nature Protection Minister Khachik Hakobyan informed that unless the project company hasn't presented a project as prescribed by law, it's not possible to organize professional discussions on the expressed concerns. The Deputy Minister assured that the project will be presented for public discussion as set by law, where the representatives of the civil society organizations will express their opinions and their concerns will undergo profession examination on their merits.
