Radioactive Lake in Ural Will be liquidated At End of November

Ria Novosti

A milestone event – final filling up of famous Karachai Lake, which is a symbol of “nuclear heritage” problem of Russian, as the Ria Novosti reports.

Karachai Lake, where “Mayak” chemical plant industrial union is located, is the first and one of the largest Russian centers on processing radioactive materials. Since October 1951 the lake has been used for dumping and preservation of radioactive wastes, which enabled to reduce radioactive wastes into the Techa River.

According to the Ria Novosti, the total activities of radioactive substances accumulated in the lake exceeds the total activities of radionuclides emitted into environment after the disaster at Chernobyl NPP.

According to the specialists, the problem of Lake Karachai won’t disappear even after the filling because of permanent leak of radionuclides into ground waters. Permanent monitoring of geological environmental of the former lake will be needed.
