Minister of Environment Erik Grigoryan is persuading the residents of near-forest communities to find alternatives to firewood at the press conference held on 5 June at the Ministry of Environment. He, particularly noted, “At the same time, we will be persistently fighting against illegal tree felling. The representatives of businesses shall think of proposing other alternatives to meet the demand for heating.” At the same time, the Minister didn’t mention the alternatives the state is offering to firewood to socially insecure residents of Armenia: trees are illegally felled down in Armenia both by businesses and natural persons. According to RA Prosecutor’s office, around 84%, 801 cases, of the crimes against the environment committed in Armenia in 2018 made up illegal tree felling cases.
