RA Nature Protection Ministry made an explanation on the open letter addressed by a number of NGOs to the Armenian Prime Minister on establishing a national center for storage and neutralization of hazardous wastes. The explanation says: “Elimination of Obsolete Pesticide Stockpiles and addressing POPs Contaminated Sites within a Sound Chemicals Management Framework” full-sized project (hereinafter the Project) plans to establish a national center on storage and management of hazardous wastes (if needed, also an area accepting wastes for further neutralization) in partnership with RA Emergency State Ministry.
On 23 May 2001 the Republic of Armenia signed and became a party to the Stockholm Convention, which was ratified by the National Assembly on 22 October 2003. The countries having joined this convention have undertaken a commitment to limit the use of persistent organic pollutants (PoPs) and eliminate the existing reserves by 2025.
The project document approved and envisages transfer of 7000 tons of soil to Hrazdan storage center for the further neutralization. The technical assignment of the current tender package requires to develop a proposal on the reconstruction of the storage area under the administration of Ministry of Emergency States. As a result of the reconstruction, a warehouse will be established in line with urban development safety and international standards (accepted by the UN), which will operated under the Ministry of Emergency States and will turn into a management center for hazardous chemical wastes. This center will serve as a temporary storage site for obsolete pesticides dug out of Nubarashen landfill site.”
