"EcoLur" Informational NGO sent an opinion on the Program of artificial trout breeding in Lake Sevan to the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia, where it's stated: “Sevan trout developing fish project under nature protection expertise by the Ministry of Nature Protection of the RA contradicts the ecological part of the “Complex Program on Artificial Trout Breeding in Lake Sevan” (hereafter, Complex Program). Reminder: the Complex Program brought forth theecologists’ complaints, who applied by letter to the Armenian Government and National Assembly demandingto stop the illegal activity contradicting the law on “Lake Sevan”, threatening the quality of the water and the habitat for endemic trout. The letter received 1519 signs from the international society and people in Gegharkunik region.
On January 23, 2014, in “Sevan” national park at the discussion on the Complex Program Andranik Gevorgyan, director of “Nature Protection Expertise” SNCO, assured that the detailed description of nature protection activities will be presented in concrete projects of the Complex Program which will be presented for nature protection expertise.
On October 21, 2014 during the public hearings on the program on artificial trout breeding in Lake Sevan held in Kartchaghbyur community Edvard Gevorgyan, director of “Sevan Trout” CJSC named nature protection activities. But in the assessment of the environmental influence of the program there is nothing mentioned about the activities named by Edvard Gevorgyan.
Thus, according to the program on artificial trout breeding in Lake Sevan in Kartchaghbyur community, in Gegharkunik region, Lake Sevan fish farming with closed water circulation will be built, where within 10 years 50 tons of fish, about 30-50 grams in weight will be bred per year. During the public hearings held on October 21, in Kartchaghbyur community, the authors of the program stated that about 25 % of the fish bredwill be poured into the lake.
It’s written in the Complex Program, “1.5 % of the fish bred is intended to pour into the lake aimed at restoring trout resources in Lake Sevan”.
It is stated in the Complex Program: “The required quantity of fish is intended to breed in farms located in 2 different parts of the basin of Lake Sevan, which will give a chance to use the water of different sources and decrease the risk of diseases”. (page 45) In the program on artificial trout breeding in Lake Sevan it’s only mentioned about the farm to be built in Kartchaghbyur and 2180 m3of water to be taken daily out of ground water sources. Thus, the risk of diseases is not assessed in the program on artificial trout breeding. It’s not assessed in the program how Lake Sevan will be influenced during the construction and exploitation of the farm.”
