The Ministry of Nature Protection intends to expand forested areas in Lake Sevan basin. This question was discussed during the session of the Scientific Technical Council adjacent to the Ministry of the RA Nature Protection. RA Minister of Nature Protection Aramayis Grigoryan inquired the members of the council what kind of trees and methodology to choose while enlarging the forested areas in Lake Sevan basin in order to provide the effectiveness of the works.

Andranik Ghulijyan, a member of the Scientific and Technical Council, Doctor of Biological Sciences said that Gegharkunik region was the most poor in forests. Only 3 percent of the area is forested. On November 15, 2012 he made N 1441-N decision on “Approving New Forests Project in the Neighbouring Areas of Lake Sevan”. It is planned by the project to restore 1094,5 ha of forest areas within 2014-2023.

The speaker informed that 18,2 ha of areas under the governance of community management and 15 ha managed by “Sevan” National Park are afforested on the administrative territory of Tsovak community in Gegharkunik region of the RA.

Andranik Ghulijanyan also raised the question of pine forests densely planted in the Soviet years. Most of the trees have withered in the above mentioned forests and in case of fire it will be impossible to implement firefighting works because of the density of trees. The speaker said that it’s necessary to implement forest thinning works.

The Minister instructed the head of the Resource Management Agency of the RA Ministry of Nature Protection to develop and present a sanitary pruning project to the Minister's approval taking into account the above mentioned suggestions.

Andranik Ghulijanyan presented the problem of Sevan-Dilijan highway being woodless in the section stretching to Gegharkunik region whereas the section stretching to Tavush region is forested. Minister Grigoryan considering important the expansion of new areas of afforestation in the region instructed the head of the Resource Management Agency together with "Sevan" National Park to study the possibilities of irrigation and acquiring  saplings in order to implement afforestation on the above mentioned section.
