The National Assembly has ratified the agreement of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The Kigali Amendment is the fifth Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which entered into force on January 2019.  Under the Montreal Protocol, HFCs were added to the list of controlled substances, which are powerful and robust greenhouse gases (GHGs), contributing to exacerbate climate change.

Phasing down HFCs, it is expected to prevent the emissions of up to 105 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent of greenhouse gases, helping to avoid up to 0.4 degree Celsius of global temperature rise by 2100, while continuing to protect the ozone layer.

By implementing the actions envisaged under the Montreal Protocol, Armenia will have its efficient contribution to the ozone layer and climate protection issues.

Armenia became the 70th among the countries that ratified the Kigali Amendment.
