The agenda of the Cabinet meeting on 12 April includes the draft law on establishing water intake amount of up to 170 million cum for irrigation purposes for 2018. This draft law has been established by State Committee on Water Industry of RA Ministry for Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources. The need for the adoption of this draft law has been conditioned with the mitigation of this year's water deficit.
In 2018 the demand for irrigation water will make up 482 million cum, which is necessary for the irrigation of around 39,000 ha of land areas located under the irrigation systems receiving water supply from Sevan-Hrazdan energetic irrigation system. This water demand is planned to be ensured from Hrazdan River in the amount of 156 million cum, Azat reservoir – around 31 million cum, Aparan reservoir – around 11.5 million cum. As a result, there is a deficit emerging in the amount of 283.5 million cum, out of which 170 million cum water is proposed to be supplemented at the expense of Lake Sevan water. It's the maximum water amount designed for water intake set by law on Lake Sevan. The officials in charge don't exclude that additional water intake will be implemented from Lake Sevan under the conditions of lack of water.
Reminder: over the recent 10 years 4 times more water intake has been carried out of Lake Sevan than it has been planned. The lake has experienced a negative balance three times already.
