The French Development Agency (GDF) will provide the Armenian government with a €10 million grant to implement irrigation reforms in the Ararat and Armavir Regions. Minister of Economy Tigran Khachatryan, presenting the project to the members of the government, noted, "With these funds "Armenia-Development of Irrigated Agriculture in Ararat and Armavir Regions" project will be implemented. The goal of the program is to provide more sustainable and effective solutions in the field of agriculture, capacity building, support to the establishment and development of cooperatives, etc."
The project consists of a € 4.4 million component of technical support and a € 5.6 million investment grant component. Tigran Khachatryan noted that the implementation of the project envisages upgrading of infrastructures in about 2000 hectares of irrigated land, with the support of at least 20 production cooperatives and farmer groups in the pilot areas with technical and financial support. The project aims at Ararat and Armavir regions, as these communities, with about 500,000 inhabitants and 65% irrigable land, have the potential to bring significant levers for modernization of agricultural production in Armenia.
