Whether the communities in Aragatsotn Region won’t experience irrigation water problems after the construction of Kosh SHPP? This question arises, as the SHPP will be constructed on the Kosh branch of Arzni-Shamiram irrigation canal. The latter feeds from the Hrazdan River. The Kosh branch works at the expense of the water outlets from the canal. In the irrigation season the Kosh branch supplies water to the irrigation system in Aragatsotn Region, including three communities – Kosh, Aragatsotn and Nor Edessia. “Environmental Grounds” documents for Kosh SHPP shows that the maximum water left for irrigation is 0.37 m3/sec, while in April-November month the maximum for Kosh branch is 2.32 m3/sec to meet the demand for irrigation systems. “As no environmental problem is solved with this flow, there is no need for the outlets of the environmental flow,” the document says.
However, besides the environmental problems, social problems arise as well: to supply irrigation water not only to Kosh Community, but also to Aragatsotn and Nor Edessia communities, which isn’t mentioned in the project as well. The annual production of electricity is 5.232 million kW/h, estimated capacity – 1839 kW. Under the document, the project territory doesn’t have endemic species, no trees and bushes will be cut down.
