S.O.S Sevan Initiative members are condemning the adoption of a bill on additional water outlets out of Lake Sevan with a total volume of 270 million cum. On 6 July RA National Assembly adopted the bill on additional water outlets out of Lake Sevan with a volume of 100 million cum to the existing 170 million cum. 74 MPs from ‘Republican Party of Armenia’, ‘Tsarukyan’, ‘Armenian Revolutionary Federation’ voted for the bill, while 4 MPs from ‘Yelq’ Faction – Nikol Pashinyan, Artak Zeynalyan, Lena Nazaryan and Sasun Mikayelyan voted against the bill.

S.O.S Sevan Initiative member, ‘Forests of Armenia’ NGO Director Nazeli Vardanyan stated, ‘The results of the voting in such a proportion, 74 votes 'for' and only 4 'votes' against, show that we don't have a parliament as a protector of voters' interests. It'smsad, especially taking into consideration that in 2018 we pass to a parliamentary system of governance. All understand what Sevan is for us and for the world society. Let's not forget that Sevan is a world value and for many years a group of scientists have been dealing with the issue of including Sevan among the UNESCO World Heritage List. And suddenly such a decision is reached, which is pernicious for Sevan. Sevan has a strategiv significance and if the parliament so easily sacrifices such a strategic priority for the satisfaction of personal interests, nobody can guarantee that other strategic interests won't be sacrificied and votes for with such an ease. It's a serious problem of national security. Each person, who presses voting button, shall realize that s/he will respond for his/her voice. This is a collegial decision, and each MP's personally liable before the people,’ Nazeli Vardanyan said.

EcoLur NGO President Inga Zarafyan, 'This decision is reached not in favour of the villagers, as the supporters of the bill claim. Farmers don't receive enough amount of water because of poor water management, losses in irrigation systems, non-expedient budget expenses and loan means destroying groundwater sources of Ararat Valley. All the arguments that this situation shall be urgently corrected and not sacrifice Sevan, were left without attention.'
