Signature Collection against Funding Hydrodevelopment Projects by Green Climate Fund

The environmental organizations have launched a signature collections, where they are opposing to the funding of hydrodevelopment projects by the UN Green Climate Fund, which is currently considering the financing of three hydropower projects, particularly, the hydrodevelopment project on the Tina River on the Solomon Islands, Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Project in Nepal and 'Cairokum' hydropower station recovery station in Tajikistan, as International Rivers Policy Director Josh Klemm said in his speech. He mentioned this approach of the fund is worrying and this issue shall be raised and made public.

In his speech Brent Millikan from Brazil particularly saud that forest losses conditioned with SHPP operation is not assessed: 'Hydropwer shall not be considered as green or clean energy,' he concluded. The representatives of South Africa, Uganda, Thailand underlined that climate change in their countries is already eye striking. Moreover, floods are recorded in South Africa, a phenomenon not having been observed before. Vamala and Victoria lakes are getting dry in Uganda, while water floods happen in dry seasons and vice versa. They stressed out hydropower as one of the factors contributing to climate change.

Many participants of 'Rivergathering' international conference joined the signature collection saying no to the funding of hydrodevelopment projects by the Green Climate Fund, including EcoLur.

Reminder: on 28-31 March  'Rivergathering' international conference is being held in Tbilisi, Georgia, where the representative of different countries worldwide are discussing dangers threatening to rivers due to hydropower development, protection of human rights, application of different mechanisms of combating, the impact of hydropower on climate change, policies run by international financial institutions. Bankwatch together with International Rivers and Green Alternative has organized this conference with the EU support.
