Mining in Lori and Syunik Continues Polluting River Water Making Them of Worst Quality

The mining continues polluting the water in the rivers in Lori and Syunik Regions makig them of the worst quality, as the latest data provided by 'Center for Environmental Impact Assessment' SNCO of RA Nature Protection Ministry show.

Thus, the worst quality water (class 5) was recorded in the estuary of the Shnogh River flowing in Lori Region. According to the certificate, the sources of water pollution are molybdenum, iron and suspended particles. It should be mentioned that the water quality started deteriorating after developing Teghout copper and molybdenum mine. 'Teghout' CJSC didn't deny its guilt and promised to correct the situation last year, nevertheless, as the official data show, the state of the Shnogh River hasn't been improved.

The next polluted river in Lori Region in the Akhtala River. The water pollution in the estuary of the river also reached the worst class – Class 5. The poor quality of the water is conditioned with the concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium, manganese, cobalt, iron and sulphate ion.

Underground toxic materials from Akhtala ore processing combine are dumped into the Akhtala River. The area located between Nahatak and Nazik reservoirs, is located above the Akhtala River and is full of tails and dumps (http://ecolur.org/en/news/mining/akhtala-combine-clean-akhtala-area-of-old-tails-before-thinking-of-new-tailing-dump-photos/6978/).
The next victim of mining is the Kartchevan River flowing in Syunik Region. The water in the estuary of the Kartchevan Rier is classified as the worst quality – class 5. The pollution here is conditioned with the molybdenum, manganese, vanadium, cobalt, iron, sulphate ion and suspended particles. Two rivers of the Voghji river basin, Vogji and Artsvanik, in the same region also recorded pollution conditioned with the concentration of manganese, ammonium ion, copper in Voghji and molybdenum, manganese and vanadium in Artsvanik. The main polluter of these two rivers is Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine.

According to the research conducted by 'Clean Energy and Water' UNDP program, 'Zangezour Coppper and Molybdenum Combine' CJSC annually dumps 473,000 cum of wastewater into the Voghji River.
