The rest season has been launched and everybody is setting off to Lake Sevan. But what kind of water we are swimming in? According to th Center for Environmental Impact Monitoring of Nature Protection Ministry (recent data – May 2016), excess of maximum concentrations is observed in the lake – chrome – 1.2-1.7 times, vanadium – 3.8-8.0 times, copper – 1.4-1.5 times, selenium – 1.2-6.5 times. The other indicators are within ranges.
Problem with garbage: three cleaning stations in Vardenis, Gavar, Martuni towns carry out mechanical cleaning and keep around 200 tons of garbage per year. As “Jinj” LLC Director thinks it’s already good for Sevan, though the stations don’t have biological or any other cleaning. “Mechanical cleaning also keeps chemical substances, which are adsorbed into the garbage,” he thinks. It should be noted that Gegharkounik Region has 27 landfill sites. A part of them is located along Sevan highway, the others are on the coast. All the garbage is dumped on the landfill sites. More plastic wastes are being used in the residential areas, which are not utilized by the farmers: you can see them on the trees, beaches and directly in the lake. As a matter of fact, there is no precise information how much garbage gets into Lake Sevan.
