Calling for All To Join Protest Demonstrations To Be Held on 4 July Against Additional Water Intake from Lake Sevan

S.O.S Sevan initiative

On 4 July, at 10:00, S.O.S Sevan initiative will hold a protest demonstration in front of RA National Assembly against the governmental proposal to have additional water intake of 100 million cum water from Lake Sevan.
On the same day, at 9:00, the local residents in Gegharkounik Region will hold a protest demonstration near the entrance of Sevan-Hrazdan water intake (next to 'Harsnaqar' Hotel Complex).
On 4 July, at 10:00, the National Assembly will start its meeting, where on the agenda is the bill on making amendments to RA Law 'On Approving Annual and Complex Programs for Recovery, Conservation, Reproduction and Use of Lake Sevan Ecosystem', which lays down to have additional water intake of 100 million m3, besides the maximum statutory water intake of 170 million cum.
On 3 June at the meeting of RA National Assembly Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Governance, Agriculture and Nature Protection, 6 MPs of RPA and 'Tsarukyan' Faction voted for the bill, while 2 MPs from 'Yelq' and 'ARF' voted against the bill.

In several days only the lake level has decreased by 4 cm` becoming 1900.87 cm from 1900.91cm in the frames of statutory-set water intake. Over 100 million cum water has already been let out of Lake Sevan. As of 3 July, the level of Lake Sevan is higher that the indicator for the same day in the last year by 11 cm. The government is claiming that as a result of additional water intake the level of Lake Sevan will decrease by 8 cm ensuring a positive balance. If additional 100 million cum water is taken from Lake Sevan in this low-water period, Sevan will inevitably have a negative balance. We are against decrease in the lake level and its water logging.
We are calling for all to join these protest demonstrations.
