From its record height of 1900.91 meters in 2017 Lake Sevan has decreased by 37 cm and has a lower level than that of the same day last year.
'As of today, we have a decrease of 3 cm in the level of Lake Sevan as compared with the same time period of the last year, but we expect that the precipitation will correct the situation to a certain extent,' as RA Nature Protection Minister Artsvik Minasyan said today at the press conference.
According to the Minister, RA Nature Protection Ministry is currently implementing monitoring to find out the consequence of the water outlets on Lake Sevan ecosystem.
Referring to the news and expert estimates on the excessive water outlets from the lake, according to which the water in Lake Sevan has reduced by 481 million cum, the Minister said, on average, annually 1-2 billion cum water evaporates from Lake Sevan and daily at least 1 million cum of evaporation occurs.
The Nature Protection Minister mentioned there is a serious problem in terms of water losses let out of Lake Sevan. 'The water intake we carry out is not effective and the water losses are huge. Our proposal is to store more water out of around 11 billion cum water formed in Armenia and to use it correctly for irrigation.'
