The decrease in the population of the crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus Esch has been recently observed in Lake Sevan, which is the consequence of using new fishing tools and overfishing, as Bardukh Gabrielyan, Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, presented the current state of bioresources of Lake Sevan at the round table entitled ''Applied Sides of Biodiversity Preservation in Armenia'' held at NAS RA. According to him, becuse of the use of listed fishing tools the fishing capacity of the crayfish has increased by 3-4 times in Lake Sevan by 2014.
The industrial reserves of the crayfish in Lake Sevan make up 4500 tons: currently the industrial extent of the crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus Esch hasn't been set by law. The Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA is proposing to set the industrial extent is 9 cm. It's also proposed to implement crayfish hunting in Lake Sevan with selected fishing means banning the use of Chinese crayfish trappers, imposing fishing ban in its spawning period – July-August. It's proposed to set the permitted limit of the crayfish 1100 tons for 2017.
