The issues related to the storage of persistent organic pollutants from Nubarashen landfill site have been discussed at the Ministry of Emergency States. In the end, it was decided, that in future the final decision would be made by the Governing Council, after which practical work would be launched. Reminder: The initial area selected for the burial of 512 tons of pests from Nubarashen burial site is the previous warehouse area of civil protection and medical goods under the control of RA Ministry for Emergency Situations, as well as pests from other 24 warehouses left from the Soviet periods with a condition to export and neutralize them in future. Around 7100 tons of polluted area in the landfill site will be neutralized on the spot. All these measures are planned in the frames of “Elimination of obsolete pesticide stockpiles and addressing POPs contaminated sites within a Sound Chemicals Management Framework in Armenia” project. This project is signed by RA Nature Protection Ministry and UNDP and is included among the priorities of the Armenian Government. It should be mentioned that Hrazdan residents are extremely concerned with the prospect of having such a storage near their residential area. According to the press release of the MES, the storage space for hazardous chemical substances shall be in compliance with modern standards ensuring environmental safety.
