On the eve of New Year Nature Protection Ministry celebrated its 30th anniversary. In his speech Nature Protection Minister Artsvik Minasyan outlined the main problems the Ministry will focus on in 2017. “2017 will be very overloaded for our ministry. We will take responsibility for natural monument in new approaches including private sector in this area. We will do our best to significantly increase fish reserves in Lake Sevan and we will strive to have fishing exclusively within law and reason. We will closely watch the lawfulness of SHPP and mine operations. We will take all efforts to prevent soil desertification and to reduce it: we won’t mercy those who eliminate forest and pollute environment,” the Minister stated. Besides Ministry employees, ex ministers, the representatives of international and public organizations cooperating with the Ministry have been invited to this event.

Ex Nature Protection Ministers Vram Tevosyan, Sargis Shahazizyan, Gevorg Vardanyan, Murad Muradyan, Vardan Ayvazyan, “Union of Greens” NGO Chairman Hakob Sanasaryan, Bardukh Gabrielyan – Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, Nature Protection Ministry employees Artsrun Pepanyan, Naira Alaverdyan and Ashot Simonyan were awarded with a golden departmental medal ‘For Significant Contribution to Nature Protection’.
A number of Nature Protection Ministry employees, as well as representatives of NGO and scientific-educational organizations performing actively in the field of nature protection were also awarded with the certificates of gratitude.

It should be mentioned that before that the launch of this event “Pan-Armenian Environmental Front” civic initiative had held a protest demonstration against mining in front of Mariott Hotel. The protesters brought a bottle full of dirty yellow liquid. They stated, “It’s alternative drinking water contaminations with tails, heap leaching. Made in the Republic of Armenia. Guards of tailing dumps, heap leach facilities and miners are provided free of charge.”

A similar protest demonstration was also held in 2014 before the launch of “Sustainable Mining” international conference in the same hotel.
