Human Rights Defender's Office has circulated a press release in regard with the problem in Ujan Village caused by SHHPs. 'We learned from the mass media that more than 1000 villagers blocked the road in Ujan Village, Arargatsotn Region as a sign of protest because of this people got deprived of drinking and irrigation water. Human Rights Defender's Office has received many complaints that people are not given opportunity to take part in decision-making of environmentally important decisions and public opinion is not taken into consideration. Public hearings are conducted, nevertheless, they often have imitation nature and the taken decision causes violations of constitutional rights to health and healthy environment. The ombudsman has addressed this problem in its report for 2012 and noted that competent state bodies don't perform their functions properly. The protest of the villagers was expressed in this way and it proves that the decision-making on SHHP projects doesn't take the public opinion into account, and as a result, the residents get deprived of water and living means. We hope that the state bodies will urgently respond to the complaints of the villagers and to take serious steps to reveal problems in this field and to eliminate the current drawbacks in the practice.'
