Ecological Consequences of Constructing Nuclear Power Station in Metsamor Discussed in Geneva

This week the session of the Implementation Committee, which has been commissioned to watch the implementation of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo), is held in Geneva.

Among discussed matter is Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant – the members of the committee will analyze what Armenia has done for the assessment of ecological consequences of the nuclear power plant in Metsamor. The actions of Belarus and Lithuania in connection with the construction of Ostrovetsk NPP are also on the agenda. In regard with Azerbaijan, the committee will discuss to what extent the legislation of Azerbaijan complies with the provisions of the Espoo convention.

The Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (informally called the Espoo Convention) is a United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) convention signed in Espoo, Finland, in 1991 that entered into force in 1997.
