It’s already the third day since Jermuk and Gndevaz residents, Vayots Dzor Region, have been holding a protest demonstration against Amulsar gold mining project blocking all the roads leading to the mine. At the same time, the residents have launched signature collection and are going to address a letter to Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan with a demand to stop this project.
“One of our demands is not to allow the mine to be opened. We don’t want any insurance or something like that. Amulsar must remain a mountain,” Jermuk resident said in her interview with EcoLur. In reply to the question, why the residents didn’t take such measures during the previous authorities, Jermuk resident said, “We also attempted during the previous authorities, but they immediately detained us and took to the police station. There was an atmosphere of fear among people. But now the situation has changed: the policemen are next to us, they share our concerns, they don’t disturb us as they used to do. They just follow not to have any quarrels with the drivers.”
The resident informed that on 20 May, the second day of the protest demonstration, they negotiated with Executive Director of “Lydian Armenia”, the implementer of Amulsar project, Hayk Aloyan and Jermuk Mayor Vardan Hovhannisyan.
Hayk Aloyan proposed they had a meeting with several protesters in order to start negotiations. The protesters rejected the offer made by the Executive Director of Lydian Armenia. “We told them we have only one demand – to close the mine: we have nothing to negotiate with you.” Hayk Aloyan stated they have invested too much money and they can’t stop the project. He said they annually provide 260 million AMD to Municipality. We said we had never seen these amounts, while Hayk Aloyan responded it is our internal affairs. When we asked the Mayor about these 260 million AMD, he proposed not to speak about it in the street, but we rejected it,’ Jermuk resident said and outlined they will continue their protest demonstrations unless Lydian officially states it refuses from Amulsar mine.
