'Sos-Saqo' LLC intends to develop Alvanq nepheline syenite open mine in Syunik Region. Nepheline syenite is a raw material for aluminum, as well as for high-quality cement. On 17 January the public hearings on Alvanq nepheline syenite open mining were held in Meghri Regional Municipality. According to the project, the balanced reserves of nepheline syenites are 807.400 m3, industrial reserves - 650.000 m3. Mining volumes will annually make up 12,000 m3. Mine lifetime is 55 years.
The mine area is located in the administrative area of Alvanq community included in Meghri Town, where nearby residential areas are Shvanidzor, Meghri and Agarak.
The mine is located in a seismically unstable zone, where the probable magnitude of the quakes may reach 9 points out of Richter’s 12-point scale. The project says that the mine area is deprived of water and the only water resource is Malev Tributary to the Aras River, which is located in a distance of 1 km. The mine area is deprived of vegetation. The project says that the local fauna is widely common in Armenia and the region doesn't have any specially protected area in it.
Reminder: in 2016 Meghri reisidents addressed a letter to Armenian PM Tigran Sargsyan opposing to the development of Alvanq nepheline syenite open mine. The project doesn't mention whether the raw material of the Alvanq nepheline syenite open mine will be processed.
Reminder: in the Soviet period the authorities wanted to develop Tezh Sar nepheline syenite open mine in Kotayq Region, but then they stepped back, as the expert proved, if an aluminum combine is constructed needed to process the raw material of the nepheline syenite, all the vegetation in a radius of 15-20 meters will be eliminated. Tezhsar developers attempted to develop it in 2012 as well, nevertheless, environmentalists opposed this initiative because of high risks of mine development. RA Nature Protection Ministry send back the project submitted by 'Alumina Corporation' LLC for amendments and supplementing, nevertheless, the new project was never put into operation.
