The Armenian Government intends to carry out additional extraction of industrial wastes from tailing dumps, as RA Nature Protection Minister Artsvik Minastab informed replying to EcoLur's questions on derelict tailing dumps and registration of mines. 'We intend to carry out additional extraction and cleaning of tailing dumps so as to mitigate and gradually eliminate the negative consequences of the tailing dumps. Currently we are running negotiations with the international organizations,' the Nature Protection Minister said. In reply to the question whether mine developers will be obligated to allocate funds for the project implementation, the minister said, 'All stakeholders will be participants in this process, including the factories. The project is not complete yet: as soon as we have a project, we will clearly present the details.' According to Artsvik Minasyan, 'Alyotig' LLC, which should have processed reclaimed Voghji and Pkhrout tailing dumps and operating Artsvanik tailing dump owned by 'Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine' CJSC, doesn't have any connection with this initiative. According to 'Strategic Assessment of Mining Sector Sustainability: Armenia', as of 2014 there were 21 tailing dumps in Armenia, out of which 8 are reclaimed and 13 are operating ones.
