Oleg Dulgaryan, the president of Center for Community Mobilization and Support NGO in Lori Region, issued a statement calling not to demolish the pastures of Mets Ayrum for the reclaiming of the tailing dump owned by Akhtala Ore Processing Plant CJSC.

The statement says: On March 12, 2020, Akhtala community administration organized a discussion in the administrative building of Mets Ayrum village in Akhtala community. Villagers complain about the impact of the tailing dump and demand that it be reclaimed, no longer increasing the tailing dams, and demolishing the road with heavy equipment.

According to the information we received, Akhtala OPP representatives told the villagers that they are starting to reclaim the tailing dump from a part of the tailing dump, and all the process will be accomplished by 2022, and that land is needed for the reclamation - they intend to apply for and obtain permission to change the order of the hillside pastures belonging to Mets Ayrum village, from agricultural to industrial, to use that land for reclamation purposes.

The land should definitely be brought from outside, it should not be taken from the administrative area of the community. No new environmental and agricultural damage will be caused to Mets Ayrum, no pastures will be demolished, and we propose to abandon this intention of causing further damage to the community.”
