If the initial exploration of oil and gas in south Armenia give positive results, 'AGAPE' company plans to drill 7 boreholes in Vayots Dzor and 2 in Syunik, as 'AGAPE' Company CEO Hrach Jabrayan said at the discussion held in Kapan Municipality on 2 November.
'We are going to spend 3 million USD for seismic works. If the results of the research are positive, we will invest US $32 million: there will be 9 boreholes in entire south Armenia...If oil and gas are explored, we have 9 years to proceed to production...If Armenia really has oil and gas, not producing them is a treason, in my opinion...We have an arrangement with the Armenian state that 50% of the income relating mined natural resources, oil and gas will be paid to the state, 50% will remain to the company. We still pay 20% taxes from the company's 50%,' Hrach Jabrayan said in his speech.
The territory of Armenia is divided into 6 conditional areas for gas and oil explorations. 'We have a right to explore blocks 4-6, while the right to explore the first three blocks belongs to Samvel Karapetyan,' Hrach Jabrayan said. It should be mentioned that "AGAPE" Company hasn't received a positive opinion from RA Nature Protection Ministry for the exploration of oil and gas either in Vayots Dzor or Syunik, as 'Expert Center for Environmental Impact Assessment' SNCO said in the telephone conversation with EcoLur.
'Armenian Company for Oil and Gas' LLC owned by the family of businessman Samvel Karapetyan received a positive opinion from RA Nature Protection Ministry in the first, second and third conditional areas of Armenia for the geological prospecting of oil and gas in Armavir, Aragatsotn, Kotayq, Lori, Shirak, and Tavush Regions.
The intention of gas and oil exploration by 'AGAPE' LLC in Kapan area is not accepted in an unequivocal manner. A part of the locals doesn't oppose to gas and oil exploration to know exactly whether or not these natural resources exist.
One of the residents opposing to oil and gas exploration Davit Hakobyan said, 'I don't want to hear about any mine more in terms of environmental problems: I and my business partners see the development prospect of our region and our state, in general, in another way and not as a mining attache. We see our development in a smart and green economy, high technologies and organic agriculture. Oil and gas mining can't ensure any development for us at all: maybe they may ensure investments in the form of salaries for 20-30 years but not investments in terms of infrastructure development. And the most important minus is the socially dependent state of our society.'
We asked newly elected Kapan Mayor Gevorg Parsyan what his attitude is towards the exploration of oil and gas in Kapan. 'I support economic activation, let it be tourism development or industry, I support economic activation not damaging the ecology in any manner.'
Reminder: the public hearings for the exploration of oil and gas by 'AGAPE' LLC to be held in Kapan on 2 November were postponed upon Kapan Mayor Gevorg Parsyan's proposal.
