Nature Protection Ministry Negatively Assessed 'Gndevanq-1' SHPP Construction Project EcoLur RA Nature Protection Ministry has issued a negative opinion to the construction project of 'Gndevanq-1' SHPP, which has been submitted for environmental expertise by “Amritam” LLC. The expert opinion says that in 2017 it’s planned to reduce the hydropower potential in the Arpa River basin in regard with the operation of “Arpa-Sevan” tunnel. The SHPP project doesn’t take into consideration in its hydroeconomic rationales the water amount let out into Lake Sevan, which will result in the drastic reduction of the water amount in the Arpa River and non-expedient use of the SHPP. In the expert assessment of the project, a part of Jermuk residents opposed to the SHPP construction during the public hearings held in Jermuk community on 27 January 2017 The participants of the public hearings mentioned the given part of the Arpa River has already been overloaded with the operation of ‘Kechout’ SHPP and currently the community is experiencing lack of irrigation water, which will get more escalated during the development of a new SHPP.
The material was developed in the frames of “Supporting new reforms in SHPP sector through CSO-government dialogue” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
