Mining Eliminating Thousands of Acres of Agricultural Land Areas

The mining is considered to be a branch of economy mostly associated with the desertification process in Armenia. According to national program “Strategy and Plan of Actions for Combating Desertification in the Republic of Armenia”, the land areas of industrial significance, soil management and other production significance made up 34,900 ha in the soil balance of Armenia in 2013. The land areas allotted to mining companies account for 9700 ha, out of which 1400 ha have been allotted for tailing dumps. Over 7000 ha of land areas of agricultural significance have been taken out of use for construction material mining in opencast manner.
