“Responsible Mining in Armenia: Opportunities and Challenges” International Conference was held in Yerevan on 25 and 26 March to discuss the ways to develop responsible mining in Armenia.
One of the speakers at the conference was Levon Galstyan, a geographer, member of coordinating board of Pan-Armenian Environmental Front, who touched upon the metallic mines and tailing dumps developed in Syunik Region. PEF members highlighted in his speech, “The companies have been insisting that sustainable mining won’t cause any damage to environment. Now, when it is difficult to substantiate, they started using ‘responsible mining’ term, the notion of which is to hide the real damage and to neutralize public criticism under the veil of economic development, corporate profit and social programs.”
