The Institute of Botany has no sufficient funds to pay for the irrigation water. “If we have sufficient funding, irrigation problems will be solved. On annual basis we need 6-7 months of irrigation. If to estimate on average, the daily expenses for water make up 120,000 - 130,000 AMD, i.e. 4 million AMD for one month. If we should irrigate for 6 or 7 months, it will make up 24-28 million AMD, but the budget allots us only 5 million AMD,” said as RA NAS Botany Institute Deputy Director Gagik Movsisyan told EcoLur.
Under the Deputy Director, 5 million AMD is not sufficient for the needs of 80-hectare garden. Now 4 guards work in the garden shifting each other, which result in theft cases. The whole work in the garden is performed by six workers. Gagik Movsisyan mentioned this year, in March; the fire in Botanical Garden caused damage of 3 million AMD to the garden. “The vegetation we usually sell has been burnt down,” Gagik Movsisyan said.
The Botanical Garden grows over 1600 plant species, because of freezing only 300 plant species have been left from previous 1200 species of tropical and subtropical collection plants. Now a part of it has been recovered and amounted to 500 plant species.
