RA Nature Protection Ministry is monitoring the socio-environmental problems in the specially protected areas of nature in Syunik Region in the frames of 'Support to Protected Areas-Armenia' project. The project area is Meghri and Kapan, which are occupied by the specially protected areas of nature – Zangezour Biosphere Complex, which is the only protected area in Armenia with such a status.

'The focus is on the socio-economic programs so as to mitigate the pressure on the forest areas and biodiversity, in general, to make people participate in our projects, which will promote the expansion of forest project, forest and biodiversity conservation. Through policies and such project we will reach the condition that our wealth and main income will be made through nature protection,' Minister Artsvik Minasyan said.

The project was launched in June 2015 and will last 5 years – up to 2020. The donor organization of this project is German KfW Bank.

Project National Coordinator Martiros Nalbandyan outlined two components – building capacities of specially protected areas of nature in Meghri and Kapan and ensuring socio-economic development of 32 communities located in the buffer zones of these areas.

In Nerqin Hand community, which is adjacent to 'Pine Park' Sanctuary, the windows of the residents' houses were changed for energy efficiency purposes. In his interview with us, one of the residents mentioned that the expenses for fuelwood have already decreased by 30-40%.
