Last Fish Reserves Eliminating in Arpi Lake

Germany wasted money?

After eliminating fish reserves in Lake Sevan now it’s turn for Arpi Lake. Since May the lake near Shaghik Village is covered with nets, where fishermen’s boats are located and where an unprecedented fishing starts – that of European carp and carp…There are no doubts that if such a situation continues another 2-3 years, then fish reserves will be exhausted in Arpi Lake. The residents of adjacent villages prove that the fish there is much less than it used to be 10 years ago and its reserves also decreased. The same situation was also observed for Sevan, but it referred to the state of the whitefish reserves. Lake Arpi is located in the territory of the National Park, that let’s recall that Lake Sevan is also located in the territory of the National Park, but it didn’t stop poachers to do what they want, while the status of specially protected territory didn’t mean anything for those who are committed to protect them duty-bound…

As Shaghik villagers assured, fishermen have their own licenses, but who checks this process. They told us that one of the fishermen cast a net, but for some reasons took it out only in 10 days with huge amount of dead European carps and carps. Another fact – vast amount of trees have been cut down not far from Shaghik village and this happened when in 2011 new “Arpi Litch” National Park was opened with an investment of 800,000 Euroes with the support and participation of GIZ, WWF and Nature Protection Ministry of Armenia. Another 800,000 Euros was allotted by German Bank for Development KfW.
