“Lydian International” company sent an invitation to several NGOs including EcoLur to take part in public hearings on “Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of Amulsar gold mining project” on July 23, at 14:00 o’clock in Hayat Place Hotel. It is mentioned in the invitation, “ESIA is designed from the point of view of social-economic impacts, impacts on health, environment, biodiversity and cultural heritage. It is stated that ESIA is based on the Equator principles developed by International Financial Corporation for the development of banks which are necessary to follow in order to get financing.
The question to the organizers was whether public hearings were open for those who wanted to take part in or closed and whether only people could participate invited in advance. Reminder: on October 30, 2014 REC Caucasus Armenia organized a discussion on “Local Action Plan on Nature Protection in Jermuk Town” in Hayat Place Hotel which was based on Amulsar project. Activist-ecologists weren’t allowed in the discussion which brought to a public protest.
On 30 October the protest demonstration against Amulsar gold mining project was accompanied with clashes between the police and the protesters. The protest demonstration was directed against the discussion entitled “Local Action Plan on Nature Protection in Jermuk Town” organized by REC Caucasus Armenia in Hayat Place Hotel, where the Amulsar gold mining project and the construction of a heap leach facility were discussed. The people gathered in front of Hayat Place Hotel demanded to allow them to take part in the discussions and to voice their viewpoint on Amulsar project.
