Unlike the local administration Jermuk resort town residents Vayots Dzor Region don’t want to sacrifice their town to mining industry. “One of our main issues is combating against Amulsar project,” Jermuk residents said.

Reminder: Lydian International LLC registered in the offshore zone of the British Virgin islands as represented by its subsidiary Geoteam Company intends to develop Amulsar gold mine located in a distance of 12 km from Jermuk.

“We are demanding to recognize Jermuk as a project affected zone.”

Neither Lydian, nor the governmental bodies in Armenia didn’t recognize Jermuk as an Amulsar projct affected zone. Still in 2013 Jermuk resident Victoria Grigoyan has filed a claim to court against Premiere Tigran Sargsyan, Nature Protection Ministry and “Environmental Expertise” SNCO on recognizing Jermuk as an Amulsar project affected community. Nevertheless, her claim has been rejected.

In 2012 Jermuk Mayor Vardan Hovhannisyan published an open letter against the project making a reference to governmental resolution № 1064 N dated on 18 September 2008 “On Recognizing Jermuk Town as Resort Center”, while a year later he stated that he didn’t see any projects risks for Jermuk as a resort town.

“Our Mayor states that the mining industry is developing here in parallel with tourism while Geoteam declares that the dust from open pit may not spread as much as 100 meters probably they are going to pull cellophane on the sky…We all understand how it turns out…Here those businessmen should speak out who owns sanatoria and health resorts… I have nothing to lose I have a two-room apartment, I’ll will lock it and leave…” the meeting participants said.

What will happen to Jermuk after Amulsar?

“After several months, if Amulsar is opened, we will be destroyed…Jermuk will be destroyed the whole Armenia as well… Geoteam has finalized everything and only they come and ask for our opinion…To what extent people should be illiterate not to understand how hazardous Amulsar project is for Jermuk.”
